In a fight, you can trap your opponent and strike. If you practice Wing Chun, you learn how to trap the attacker and make your move.

So is Wing Chun Trapping really useful for self defense?

When you are being attacked, the attacker will not keep his hands forward so that you can trap and block that. He will attack you fast and keep attacking. You might find it difficult to trap the attacker.

Does it make trapping useless?

I don't think so. Trapping will not useful in every situation. But you can use it for self defense. There are some misconceptions about trapping like if you trap the attacker, he will not be in a position to do anything.

The attacker can move and get out of the trap. But the thing is, as soon as you trap the attacker, he will find it difficult to strike you and you can use that moment to attack him.

You can put the attacker in an unfavorable situation by trapping. Then you can make your move in that time to protect yourself. So what do you think about trapping?
