[Sanded and ready for sealant]
Very short post in the process of the cuatro. So, once the pieces are ready, it's time to apply sealant. There are different techniques to do this. I know Europeans and other luthiers in Latin America favor shellac over varnish. Why? Well, it's a matter of preference. Both things require preparation and both results are amazing if you know what you're doing. Shellac has the benefit of not needing special equipment. To apply varnish you need an airbrush. Varnish is too viscous and as oil paint it would leave the trace of a brush if you used one to apply it. That's difficult to remove with sandpaper. Not impossible, but it would require hours of sanding. For this cuatro, I'm not using any of these. I'm sticking to sealant. First, I don't have varnish and that type of finish is expensive. I already told my price and varnish was not included. Second, shellac is really expensive. Also, before applying shellac you need to seal the wood with pumice and alcohol. So it's more work. However, it's my plans to learn to use both these techniques for the different tiers of instruments I'll have available after the constitution of the workshop.
Un post muy corto sobre el proceso de este instrumento. Una vez que todas las piezas están listas, llegó la hora de aplicar el sellador. Hay muchas formas de hacer esto. Los europeos y otros luthieres de este lado del mar prefieren la goma laca al barniz. ¿Por qué? Preferencias. Ambos medios requieren preparación y ofrecen resultados increíbles si son usados apropiadamente. La goma laca no requiere de equipos especiales. El barniz necesita un aerógrafo. Es muy vicoso para ser aplicado con brocha o pincel. Si se hiciera así, al igual que con una pintura de óleo, el trazo se vería. Ese trazo es difícil de eliminar con papel de lija. Puede hacerse, pero requiere horas de lijado. Para este cuatro, no usaré ninguno de estos. Solo se aplicará sellador. Primero, porque no tengo barniz o goma laca. Además, el precio del instrumento fue dado sin este detalle en cuenta. Segundo, la goma laca es costosa. Y para aplicarla, primero se debe sellar la madera con piedra pomez y alcohol. Así que es más trabajo. Sin embargo, está dentro de los planes del taller ofrecer diferentes tipos de acabados para los instrumentos.
What you can see in this pictures is the beginning of this long process. There are no more pictures because they are actually the same. First, you sand the whole instrument. I went from grit 100 to 360. Then I started to apply sealant. Each new layer of sealant is sanded too starting from grit 280 up to 400. This is in order to even the surface and protect the instrument from the humidity of the weather and the hands of the player. At the moment of writing this post, I have already applied 3 layers of thick sealant. That leaving them to dry for at least 12 hours. And 4 layers of thinner sealant. Those need around 2-4 hours to dry. And of course, sanding between each layer takes around 1 to 1 and 1/2 hour.
Lo que pueden observar en estas fotos es el comienzo de este proceso. No hay más fotos porque sería repetir lo mismo. Primero, se lija toda la superficie del instrumento. Se parte desde un grano 100 hasta 360. Luego, se aplica el sellador. cada nueva capa de sellador se lija comenzando con grano 280 hasta 400. Esto se hace con el fin de aplanar cada capa y proteger el instrumento contra la humedad del ambiente y las manos que lo toquen. Al momento de escribir este post, se han aplicado 3 capaz de sellador en pasta. Estas necesitan un mínimo de 12 horas para secar. Y 4 capaz de sellador diluido. Estas necesitan entre 2 a 4 horas para secar. Por supuesto, se lija entre cada capa y esto lleva alrededor de 1 hora a 1 hora y media.
